AWG wire gauge — the backwards numbering, explained
It took me embarrassingly long to internalise that a bigger AWG number means a smaller wire. The reason is historical, and once you know it, you never forget the direction again.
American Wire Gauge is not a measurement in the modern sense. It is a count of how many times a copper rod was pulled through progressively smaller dies to reach a given diameter. AWG 40 was pulled through forty dies; AWG 10 through ten. More passes, thinner wire. That is why the scale is inverted.
The elegant part — and this is the bit I had to look up twice before it stuck — is that the ratio between any two consecutive gauges is constant. The 39th root of (0.4600 / 0.005) is roughly 1.1229. Every three steps in AWG doubles the cross-sectional area (well, close enough — 1.1229³ ≈ 1.415, so three steps is √2 in area, six steps is 2×).
The numbers I actually use
AWG 12 = 3.31 mm² — a standard 20 A house circuit. AWG 14 = 2.08 mm² — 15 A. AWG 10 = 5.26 mm² — 30 A dryer. AWG 6 = 13.3 mm² — a 60 A subpanel feed. AWG 22 = 0.326 mm² — bell wire, arduino jumpers, most breadboard work. AWG 30 = 0.0509 mm² — wire-wrap and PCB repair.
Metric wire is honest — it is quoted in mm² of copper cross-section — but every US electrical code, every American motor nameplate, every hardware-store spool is still in AWG. Both survive because both work, and nobody wants to reprint the code books.
The mnemonic that stuck
'Gauge is passes through the die.' More passes, thinner wire. I say it under my breath every time I stand in the wire aisle at the hardware store, and I have not bought the wrong gauge since 2019. Before that, I had a small collection of extension cords made of thermostat wire.
One catch worth knowing: AWG only goes down to 4/0 (called 'four aught', written 0000). Anything bigger and the industry gives up on gauges and quotes kcmil — thousands of circular mils of cross-section. 250 kcmil is roughly the next step past 4/0. Utility-scale wire is all kcmil; house wire is all AWG; the crossover is around 200 A service entrance.

Is stranded AWG the same cross-section as solid AWG?+
Very nearly. A stranded conductor has small air gaps between strands, so the outside diameter is slightly bigger for the same copper area — matters when you are sizing conduit fill, not when you are sizing for current.
What is 'zip cord' AWG?+
Household lamp cord is almost always 18 AWG. Speaker wire ranges from 16 AWG for a stereo run to 12 AWG for long home-cinema pulls. Fatter than the amps demand, but the low resistance helps damping.
