Beats per minute and hertz — the tempo/frequency bridge

A tempo in BPM is a frequency in disguise. Divide by 60 to get hertz.

Music software, cardiac monitors and metronomes all describe repeating events per minute. Audio engineers who sync LFOs to tempo, or clinicians reading an ECG, jump between BPM and Hz constantly — and the arithmetic is one factor of 60.

The exact factor

1 BPM = 1/60 Hz ≈ 0.01667 Hz > 1 Hz = 60 BPM > Period (s) = 60 / BPM

Where each is used

BPM: musical tempo, DAW project rate, running cadence, heart rate. Hz: LFO rate, filter cutoff, sensor sampling, AC mains. Musicians tuning a tremolo pedal in Hz have to convert from a song's BPM to lock the effect to the beat.

Worked example — a synced delay

A track sits at 128 BPM. A quarter-note delay time is 60 / 128 = 0.469 s = 469 ms. An eighth-note delay is half that: 234 ms. A dotted-eighth (a common Edge-of-U2 sound) is 234 × 1.5 = 352 ms. Feed those into any delay pedal calibrated in milliseconds and the repeats lock to the grid.

Why don't DAWs just show Hz?+

Musicians think in bars and beats, not seconds. BPM keeps mental arithmetic in whole numbers for common tempos.

Is heart rate really a frequency?+

Yes — a resting 60 BPM heart is a 1 Hz pump. ECG frequency-domain analysis (HRV) treats it exactly that way.
