Choosing bowling ball weight by rev rate and shoulder strength

I bowled with a 16 lb ball for a decade because a shoe rental guy told me 'it's 10% of your body weight'. My shoulder ached, my hook was weak. Dropped to 14 lb and my average went up 20 pins in a month. The 10% rule is a bad heuristic that survived because it's simple.

Bowling balls in the US come in 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 lb — 16 is the maximum legal weight. The 16-pounder was the standard for decades and most house balls in the rack are 16, which is why beginners default up. Modern coaching universally recommends going lighter.

Why lighter is better

A hook comes from the ball's rev rate — revolutions per second imparted by your wrist and fingers on the release. A heavy ball you can barely swing forces you to muscle it, which kills rotation. A ball you can swing smoothly gives you a natural pendulum motion and a clean release, which spins more, hooks more, and hits the pocket harder.

The pocket physics

Pin action depends on ball momentum, not just mass. A 14 lb ball at 18 mph carries the same momentum as a 16 lb ball at 15.75 mph, and the 14 lb ball is easier for most bowlers to throw at 18 mph. Below about 13 lb the ball starts deflecting off the head pin instead of driving through, so there's a floor.

Bowling worldwide uses lb because USBC standards do. 16 lb = 7.26 kg. 14 lb = 6.35 kg. European leagues still spec in pounds.

Sort of — 15 is the modern pro standard because the top lb of legal weight has diminishing returns. Many pros dropped from 16 to 15 in the 2000s.
