Calories, kilocalories, kilojoules — the food-label ambiguity
The 'Calorie' with a capital C on your food label is 1,000 scientific calories. The dual meaning is a century-old shorthand that no one has fixed.
In physics, one calorie is the energy needed to raise 1 g of water by 1 °C — about 4.184 J. In nutrition, 'one calorie' means 1,000 of those, i.e. one kilocalorie. The food industry has never distinguished them clearly, and this is why every EU food label carries both kJ and kcal.

Why nutrition uses the big calorie
Wilbur Atwater, the pioneer of food calorimetry in the 1890s, used the kilocalorie because human diets involve millions of small calories per day. Writing '2,000,000 cal' on a label is absurd. He proposed capitalising the C — 'Calorie' — to mark the 1000× version. Modern labelling dropped the capitalisation but kept the meaning.
EU dual labelling
Since 1990, EU regulation requires food energy be shown in both kJ (primary) and kcal (secondary). A 100 g portion of pasta might read '1,470 kJ / 350 kcal' — the same energy in two units. Multiply kcal by 4.184 to check.
Worked example — a 500 kcal meal
500 kcal × 4.184 = 2,092 kJ. In older CGS units: 5 × 10⁵ small calories. In watt-hours: 500 × 1.163 = 582 Wh — enough to run a laptop for 8 hours. In hard physics units, human daily intake (~10 MJ) is roughly the energy of 2 kg of TNT.
