How rope diameter affects weight, handling and gear compatibility
My first rope was a 10.2 mm workhorse and I used it for everything. Now I own three ropes of different diameters, because I finally learned that a single-rope diameter is a compromise and the compromise you want depends on what you're climbing.
Single climbing ropes come in diameters roughly 8.5 to 10.5 mm, measured in millimeters even in the US. The number is measured under a specific tension load per the UIAA/CE standard, so a '9.8 mm rope' actually varies slightly by manufacturer — some run 9.75, some 9.85. It's close enough for practical purposes but matters for gear compatibility.
The tradeoffs
Thick (9.8-10.2 mm): heavy (60-70 g/m), durable, handles well through belay devices, tolerates falls on sharp edges better, holds many hundreds of top-rope laps before retirement. Thin (8.5-9.2 mm): light (50-58 g/m), less rope drag on long pitches, faster to pull through gear, but wears out faster and runs faster through belay devices.
Belay device compatibility
This is the part nobody tells you. A Petzl Grigri (original) is rated 8.9-11 mm. The Grigri+ handles 8.5-11 mm. An ATC-XP handles 7.7-11 mm. Buying a 8.5 mm rope for use with an old Grigri means your assisted-braking device might not engage properly on a fall. Always cross-check rope diameter against device specs.
Length
Standard sport rope is 60 or 70 m; 80 m is common in Europe and increasingly in the US where routes have gotten longer. A 60 m rope reaches a 30 m anchor with the middle mark. Cutting damaged ends is normal — a 70 m rope after two seasons might be a 65 m rope with a fresh cut.
