How e-bike motor watts and torque actually translate to feel

I test-rode two e-bikes on the same hill last week. The US 750 W one felt weaker than the EU 250 W one. Same battery voltage, same rider (me). The difference is that watts is the legal limit but torque is what your legs feel, and manufacturers spec both because they mean different things.

Electric bike motors are rated by 'nominal continuous power' in watts. EU-legal is 250 W, US Class 1-2 is 750 W, US Class 3 is also 750 W but with a higher speed cutoff. The number is a legal ceiling on sustained output, not peak. Peak output at motor startup or on a steep hill can be 500-1000 W on an EU 250 W motor and 1500-2000 W on a US 750 W motor.

Torque is what you feel

Newton-meters (Nm) measure rotational force at the crank or hub. On a mid-drive motor this multiplies through the bike's gears — a 90 Nm mid-drive in low gear delivers massive wheel torque, which is what climbs hills. A high-power hub motor with only 50 Nm can feel weak on steep grades because the torque doesn't get multiplied by gearing.

Watts vs Nm mathematically

Power = torque × angular velocity. A motor producing 90 Nm at 60 rpm (typical pedaling cadence) delivers 90 × (60 × 2π/60) = 565 W of mechanical power at that instant. If the legal ceiling is 250 W continuous, the motor is legally allowed to hit 565 W briefly (a peak-power exemption most regulations grant), then settle back to 250 W once you're moving.

The battery separately

Wh is battery capacity: voltage × amp-hours. A 500 Wh battery on a 250 W motor runs about 2 hours flat out, or 4-6 hours with pedal assist doing most of the work. Range in km depends on assistance level, rider weight, terrain, and headwind more than on the motor spec.

Is a 750 W US bike faster than a 250 W EU bike?+

Not necessarily. Both cap at similar top speeds (25-32 km/h depending on class). The 750 W bike accelerates and climbs harder.

Why do EU bikes 'feel' powerful?+

Because premium EU 250 W mid-drives (Bosch, Shimano) spec very high torque (85-90 Nm) and multiply it through the bike's gearing.
