ISO on film vs ISO on a digital sensor

I shot film for years before I bought a digital camera, and my first year of digital was frustrating because I was treating ISO the way I did on film — pick a stock, live with its grain. Digital ISO is a completely different mechanism and it took me a while to unlearn the intuition.

On film, ISO (formerly ASA) is a measured chemical property. Larger silver-halide crystals catch more light and produce a higher rated speed, but the same crystals create the visible grain when developed. ISO 100 Kodak Ektar is fine-grained and low-sensitivity. ISO 3200 Ilford Delta is coarse-grained and high-sensitivity. You pick the roll for the light you expect and you're stuck with it for 36 exposures.

Digital ISO is amplification

A digital sensor has one native sensitivity — usually around ISO 100 for full-frame, sometimes 200. Higher ISO settings amplify the signal off the sensor before or after the analog-to-digital converter. You are not making the sensor more sensitive; you are turning up the volume, and the noise gets turned up with it. Some cameras have 'dual gain' architectures where a second base ISO exists (often around 640) at which noise resets — the graph is not always linear.

Why this matters practically

Film grain is aesthetic; a lot of people like it. Digital noise (especially the color speckle in shadows) is mostly ugly and modern raw processing tries to remove it. This is why 'shoot at base ISO whenever possible' is standard digital advice but nonsense on film. It's also why shooting a scene at ISO 100 and pushing it 3 stops in raw often looks better than shooting the same scene at ISO 800 in-camera on the same sensor — modern sensors are 'ISO invariant' above a threshold.

The stops

ISO doubles are stops just like aperture and shutter. 100 → 200 → 400 → 800 → 1600 → 3200 is 5 stops of exposure. Between doublings, 1/3-stop increments (100, 125, 160, 200) match the aperture and shutter clicks on most cameras.

FAQ

What's ISO invariance?+

A sensor is ISO-invariant if shooting at ISO 100 and brightening in post gives the same result as shooting at higher ISO in-camera. Most modern sensors are close to invariant above ~ISO 400.

Why do some cameras stop at ISO 25600?+

Marketing wants big numbers, but at very high ISO you're just amplifying the same photons with more noise. There's rarely useful image data beyond the sensor's true dynamic range.
