Joules, calories, kWh and BTU: reconciling the four energy dialects

A joule is a joule. But the world sells you energy in kWh, quotes you food in kilocalories, sizes your boiler in BTU, and expects you to keep it all straight.

Energy is one physical quantity with an SI unit (the joule) and about a dozen alternative dialects that will not go away. This is the reference we wish had been printed on the back of every physics textbook — the exact factors, plus the historical reasons the four biggest units (J, cal, kWh, BTU) all still exist.

The four you actually need

The calorie is the loudest source of confusion. There are at least five official definitions — thermochemical, International Table (IT), 4 °C, 15 °C, and 20 °C — and they differ by up to 0.2%. For nutrition, all of them are rounded and the difference is inside label-tolerance. For engineering thermodynamics, always specify which calorie the table uses.

The kilocalorie / Calorie / calorie tangle

A food-label "Calorie" (capital C) is a kilocalorie — 1,000 physics calories. A 250 Calorie granola bar is 250 kcal = 1,046 kJ ≈ 0.29 kWh of chemical energy. If a physics textbook says "250 cal of heat" without a capital, that is 250 small calories = 1.046 kJ — a thousand times less. Every physics teacher watches their students trip on this at least once.

Where the BTU comes from

One British thermal unit is defined as the heat required to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. That is roughly 1.055 kJ, which makes 1 kWh = 3,412 BTU — the number every HVAC contractor knows by heart. Refrigeration equipment adds a further wrinkle: a "ton" of cooling is 12,000 BTU/hr, the rate at which one short ton of ice melts over 24 hours.

Reading a utility bill against physics

US electric bills quote kWh. Natural-gas bills quote therms (1 therm = 100,000 BTU = 105.5 MJ) or ccf (one hundred cubic feet, with an energy content that varies by wellhead composition). A gallon of gasoline packs roughly 33.7 kWh of chemical energy — which is why EPA MPGe uses that exact number as the yardstick for electric-vehicle efficiency comparisons.

Worked example — heating a bath

A 200 L bath from 15 °C to 40 °C requires ΔE = m·c·ΔT = 200 kg × 4,186 J/(kg·°C) × 25 °C = 20.93 MJ. Convert: 20.93 MJ ÷ 3.6 = 5.81 kWh, or ÷ 1.055 = 19,835 BTU, or ÷ 4.184 = 5,003 kcal. At $0.15/kWh that bath costs about 87 cents in electric water heating, ignoring standby and recovery losses.

Where the electron-volt shows up

In atomic and particle physics energies are so small that the joule is unwieldy. The electron-volt is the energy an electron gains crossing a 1-volt potential: 1 eV = 1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹ J. Chemistry uses kJ/mol, spectroscopy uses cm⁻¹ (a reciprocal-length unit that is actually an energy in disguise via E = hcν̃). All of them convert exactly through the joule.

Is BTU the same as BTU/hr?+

No — the BTU is an energy; the BTU/hr is a power (energy per time). A furnace rated at 80,000 BTU/hr delivers about 23.4 kW of heating capacity.
